At the request of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a delegation from the Venice Commission (European Commission for Democracy through Law) visited our Council on 4 October 2024. The delegation included Member Rapporteurs Mr. Richard BARRETT (Ireland), Mr. António Silva Henriques GASPAR (Portugal), Ms. Nina BETETTO (Slovenia), and Secretariat Representative Ms. Martina SILVESTRI (Italy). The visit was made as part of preparations for the draft opinion on the independence of the judiciary in Türkiye, the composition of the Council of Judges and Prosecutors, and the procedure for electing its members, which will be presented at the 141st General Assembly of the Venice Commission.
The delegation was welcomed by Mr Mehmet Akif EKİNCİ, Acting President of CJP and the President of the 2nd Chamber; Mr Halil KOÇ, the President of the 1st Chamber; Mr Atila ÖZTÜRK, Secretary General and Mr Sinan EKİCİ, Deputy Secretary General was provided with a presentation on the structure and functioning of our Council. Following this, the guest delegation posed questions regarding the selection process of members of our Council, its working procedures and practical implementations as a basis for the draft opinion, and the meeting was concluded following the Q&A. After the presentation of gifts and a group photo, the guest delegation was seen off from our Council.
